Listen to how technology talks about itself. Companies run "war rooms" and launch "campaigns," products have "targets" and "kill chains," startups pursue "asymmetric" advantages and practice "growth hacking," and the founding ethos of an era of Silicon Valley — "move fast and break things" — is, at its core, a doctrine of aggressive, damage-tolerant advance that would not be out of place in a manual of maneuver warfare. This is not entirely metaphor and not entirely accident. The internet itself began as a military-funded project (ARPANET, born of Cold War research), much foundational computing was shaped by defense funding and personnel, and the mental models of conflict — speed, decisiveness, tolerance for collateral damage, the framing of markets as battlefields and competitors as enemies — have seeped so deeply into how civilian technology thinks that they no longer register as military at all. They are simply how tech operates, an inherited cognitive framework whose origins in war-thinking have become invisible through familiarity.
This is cognitive militarization: the quiet infiltration of military thinking — its language, doctrines, and mental models of conflict — into civilian technology culture, so that ways of thinking forged for war (aggressive speed, decisive dominance, tolerance for breakage, the framing of everything as a battle to be won) become the unexamined default of how technology is built and run, their martial origins invisible through habituation.
Why war-thinking migrated into tech
Cognitive militarization happened through real and traceable channels, not vague cultural osmosis — technology and the military have been entangled from the start, and the entanglement carried mental models along with money and machines. Foundational computing was substantially shaped by defense: ARPANET, much early funding, and a flow of personnel between military, intelligence, and tech meant that the frameworks of military thinking — how to think about adversaries, speed, decisiveness, acceptable losses — traveled into technology culture along with the technology itself. And war-thinking is attractive to competitive enterprise because it offers a compelling frame: business as combat, markets as battlefields, competitors as enemies to be defeated, provides a clarifying, motivating, action-oriented mental model that maps seductively onto the pressures of building and competing. So the language spread ("campaigns," "targets," "war rooms"), and with the language came the thinking — because the terms we use shape the frames we reason in, so adopting military vocabulary quietly imports military mental models: to call a market a battlefield is to think about it as one, to frame a competitor as an enemy is to reason about them adversarially. "Move fast and break things" is the purest distillation: a doctrine of rapid, damage-tolerant advance that accepts collateral breakage in exchange for speed and dominance — genuinely a military logic (the maneuver-warfare preference for tempo over caution) transplanted into product development, where the "breakage" is borne by users, society, and the systems moved fast through. The migration was real, traceable, and largely unnoticed, because by the time the thinking arrived, it had shed the uniform.
Why the invisible framing shapes what gets built
Cognitive militarization matters because mental models are not neutral — war-thinking, once it becomes the invisible default, shapes what technology gets built and how, in ways that carry the values of conflict into domains that are not wars. When technology is thought through a martial frame, certain things follow: speed is prized over care (tempo wins battles), dominance over coexistence (you win by defeating, not sharing), breakage is acceptable (collateral damage is the cost of advance), and the world is sorted into allies and enemies, targets and campaigns — and these are the values of war, imported into building consumer products, social platforms, and civilian infrastructure where they may be badly misplaced. "Move fast and break things" built real things and broke real ones — the breakage of social fabric, of privacy, of institutions moved fast through — because a doctrine tolerant of collateral damage was applied to a civilian domain where the collateral was society itself. The series' Pentagon Ethics (#93) examined the explicit convergence of tech and defense in contracts and weapons; cognitive militarization is the implicit version — not the deliberate building of military technology but the unnoticed thinking-like-the-military about civilian technology, which shapes products no one intended as weapons through a frame no one chose. And the framing is self-obscuring: because the military origins are invisible, the values ride in unexamined, so a culture can adopt the mental models of war while believing it is simply being "bold," "disruptive," or "competitive," never noticing that it has imported a way of thinking whose home domain was killing.
The counterpoint: military thinking is not always wrong, and the frame can illuminate
Honesty requires the strong objection, because "military thinking infiltrated tech" can slide into a reflexive condemnation that is both unfair and analytically lazy — military thinking is not inherently bad, and some of what it brought to technology is genuinely valuable. Military institutions have developed real wisdom under the hardest conditions: rigorous logistics, clear decision-making under uncertainty, disciplined execution, serious thinking about failure and resilience — and technology has benefited from importing some of this, so the influence is not uniformly a contamination. Some martial frames genuinely illuminate: thinking rigorously about adversaries is exactly right for security (where there really are attackers), and the discipline of planning for failure is valuable everywhere. And the tech-military entanglement produced enormous civilian good — the internet itself — so the origin is not a stain. So cognitive militarization is not "military thinking is bad and tech should purge it." It is the narrower and more careful claim that war-thinking has infiltrated civilian technology invisibly, that its martial values (speed over care, dominance over coexistence, tolerance of breakage) ride in unexamined and are often misplaced in civilian domains where the world is not actually a battlefield — and that the correction is not to reject military thinking wholesale (some of it is wise and some domains, like security, genuinely are adversarial) but to make the framing visible, so it can be applied where apt and questioned where the martial values are being imported into a domain that is not, and should not be treated as, a war. The problem is the invisibility, not the presence.
What it asks of us
Cognitive militarization asks technology's builders to see the frame they are thinking in — to notice when martial mental models are shaping their choices, and to ask whether the domain in front of them is actually a battlefield or is only being treated as one out of inherited habit. In practice that means attending to the language (the "war rooms," "targets," and "campaigns" that quietly import war-thinking), asking whether "move fast and break things" is appropriate when the breakage lands on users and society, and distinguishing the domains that genuinely are adversarial (security, where thinking about attackers is correct) from those where the martial frame of dominance-and-collateral-damage is badly misplaced (building the civic and social infrastructure people live in). The deeper recognition is that mental models are not neutral tools but value-laden frames — that to think about something as a war is to import the values of war, and that a technology culture which adopted military thinking without noticing has been carrying those values into domains that are not wars and should not be run like them. The goal is not to purge the genuine wisdom military thinking offers, but to make its presence visible — to choose the frame deliberately rather than inherit it unexamined — because a civilization building the systems everyone lives in through the invisible logic of conflict is making choices, about speed and dominance and acceptable breakage, that it never consciously decided, in a war it never declared, against enemies who were only ever its own users.
